Reflection:
Learning about the life and work of Watts Humphrey helped me understand that real progress in technology doesn’t rely solely on technical knowledge. It also depends on the ability to question, analyze, and improve what already exists. Humphrey didn’t settle for existing methods — he created new ones, even when they were not well received at the time.
This is where critical thinking plays a key role: being able to evaluate ideas objectively, without accepting everything just because “it has always been done that way.” Despite criticism, Humphrey stayed true to his vision and revolutionized the way software is developed.
As a future software technologist, his story inspires me not to settle for easy answers or half-truths. It also reminds me of the importance of media literacy, because in a world full of information and misinformation, knowing how to interpret sources, question facts, and form my own well-informed opinions is as important as knowing how to code.
Watts Humphrey taught us a powerful lesson: true innovation is born from critical thinking — from daring to ask “why not?” and being willing to do the hard work, even when others doubt you.
